Who Funds Bo French? Major Donors, PACs and Campaign Finance

Published

Source: The Texas Tribune, March 31, 2026 Read it

Quick answer

Bo French's 2026 campaign for the Texas Railroad Commission has received major financial support from the Texas Freedom Fund for the Advancement of Justice, a political action committee predominantly financed by West Texas oil billionaires Tim Dunn and Farris Wilks. The Texas Tribune has also identified other PACs, family members and oil-industry figures among French's major sources of campaign support. This page separates direct campaign contributions from advertising and other political spending rather than combining them into a single total.

Major donors

Who funds Bo French?

The largest amount listed in The Texas Tribune's September 15, 2026 “Major donors this year” section for French was the Texas Freedom Fund for the Advancement of Justice at $773,500, as of September 15, 2026.

The Tribune identified the PAC as supported by Tim Dunn and Farris Wilks. It also listed Texas Conservative Voters PAC at $285,000, Marcia Fuller French at $100,000, Luke Dunn at $50,000, and Farris Wilks at $25,000, all as of the Tribune's September 15 candidate guide.

Reading the figure

What the $773,500 figure does and does not mean

The $773,500 figure should not be read as a single direct cash contribution.

Two days later, The Texas Tribune described the Texas Freedom Fund's support as nearly half a million dollars in cash contributions and $300,000 in advertising spending, as of September 17, 2026. The categories matter because campaign contributions and outside promotional spending are different forms of political support.

The primary

The money behind the primary campaign

The Texas Freedom Fund for the Advancement of Justice was formerly known as Defend Texas Liberty. In a March 31, 2026 investigation, The Texas Tribune called the PAC the main benefactor of French's March Republican primary campaign.

As of March 31, the Tribune reported that the PAC had spent $375,000 supporting French: $225,000 as a direct contribution and $150,000 on an advertisement promoting his candidacy in a conservative newsletter.

At that stage of the race, French had raised $637,139 from the start of his campaign through late February 2026, according to the Tribune. The newspaper reported that support from the Dunn- and Wilks-backed PAC accounted for more than half of that amount.

By September 17, the Tribune reported that several oil executives had also contributed to French. Luke Dunn, an executive at CrownQuest Operating and Tim Dunn's son, had donated at least $50,000 as of September 17, 2026. Alex Williamson, president of ANW Minerals, had also donated at least $50,000 as of September 17, 2026. The Tribune reported that Midland businessman Miles Boldrick had contributed tens of thousands of dollars during 2026, without giving a single exact total in that article.

Who are Tim Dunn and Farris Wilks?

Tim Dunn and Farris Wilks made their fortunes in the oil business. The Texas Tribune describes them as West Texas oil billionaires and reported on March 31 that they have predominantly financed the Texas Freedom Fund and its predecessor.

The Tribune also reported that they have deployed tens of millions of dollars in Texas politics in support of candidates aligned with their positions on immigration, LGBTQ+ issues and the direction of the Texas Republican Party.

The Tribune quoted Joshua Blank, research director of the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin, saying that French's political positions made him a “natural ally” for donors such as Dunn and that early financial support could help build French's political prospects. That is Blank's analysis, not a finding that any donor received or was promised a specific policy outcome.

Houston Chronicle columnist Chris Tomlinson wrote on February 26, 2026 that Dunn and the Texas Freedom Fund also finance the True Texas Project PAC. His column cited reporting about a 2024 event hosted by that organization that was described as explicitly Christian nationalist. This characterization comes from the cited reporting and is not presented here as an independent characterization by this site.

The office

Why the oil-industry connection matters to the office

The Texas Railroad Commission does not regulate railroads. According to the Commission itself, it has primary regulatory jurisdiction over Texas oil and natural gas production, pipeline transporters, natural gas and hazardous-liquid pipelines, natural gas utilities, LP-gas, critical natural-gas infrastructure, and coal and uranium surface mining.

That makes the industry backgrounds of some campaign contributors relevant context. The Texas Tribune reported on September 17 that French had received contributions from several oil-sector executives, while noting that major oil and gas companies had not backed French to the same extent they had backed incumbent Commissioner Jim Wright during the Republican primary.

French defeated Wright in the Republican runoff on May 26, 2026 and is the Republican nominee for the November general election.
